Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects that has been hitting the news more and more often this year. Filmmakers, musicians, artists and designers spend weeks building project pages, shooting videos and brainstorming rewards.

In return for funding, investors get things like a copy of what’s been made or a customised experience related to the project. The company recently reported that it has raised $200 million from over 2 million backers.

Kickstarter is not meant to help you earn money to launch a business. Rather, it’s about earning money to complete a finite goal, whether that’s releasing your band’s latest album, completing a book, etc. Once the project is funded, the journey to bring them to life begins.

Every project creator sets their project’s funding goal and deadline. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal all backers’ credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short no one is charged.

It’s a great place to find new and innovative creative projects and is really worth a look. For starters, check out the current projects by Amanda Palmer, Scanbox and the hugely popular Pebble Watch.
