Chamber Welcomes 9th December Date for Luas Opening

November 9, 2017, 10:00

Business group Dublin Chamber has welcomed the confirmation that services will begin on the new Luas Cross City line on Saturday 9th December.

The Chamber, which represents more than 1,300 businesses in Dublin, said the completion of the project will provide a major boost to city centre retailers ahead of the crucial Christmas period.

Services on the new line between St Stephens Green and Cabra will commence at 2pm on Saturday 9th December, it has been confirmed.

According to Dublin Chamber's Head of Public Affairs Graeme McQueen: "It has been a long 5 years for businesses in the city centre, but it is fantastic to see that the line will open on-time and in advance of Christmas. The weeks preceding Christmas are hugely important for Dublin retailers. The opening of the Luas Cross City extension provides shops and businesses in the city with a huge boost."

Dublin Chamber commended all parties involved in the delivery of Luas Cross for delivering the project on schedule.

Mr McQueen said: "Throughout the construction phase of the project we have worked closely with Luas Cross City, the NTA, Gardai and other stakeholders to minimise the impact of the works on businesses and people coming in and out of the city. Luas across City shows how well Ireland can deliver big projects."

The Chamber said an early December opening presents all city centre stakeholders with an opportunity to encourage people to come in and enjoy the city centre this Christmas.

Mr McQueen added: “The extension of the Luas network through the heart of the city and out to Cabra will be a fantastic addition to the city's transport network. Constructing the new line has been a complicated task and has resulted in significant upheaval over the past 5 years. But the city will reap the benefits of the new line for decades to come."
